Disclaimer: First and foremost, I think it's important to contextualize one's achievements to enlighten others about the difficulties they overcame to achieve what they did. For me, this means a deeper connection can form, where those individuals can truly serve as relatable role models. This is why I've contextualized my academic achievements below.
MY ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS:
> A 3rd-year Physics undergraduate at the University of Leicester, currently working at a 2.1 (I used to fail physics in secondary school with D grades)
> Was awarded 3 scholarships in my 1st year of university (1 scholarship based on academic achievement + 2 scholarships for coming from a disadvantaged background)
> Attained a First Class, ranking 11th/104 in my cohort in 1st-year examinations (whilst fasting during Ramadhan, with debilitating anxiety)
> A*/A grades in A-level Maths and Physics in sixth form, winning the Trustee's Prize in Mathematics & T.C Edwards Memorial Prize in Physics (Initially, I was targeted B/C grades in Maths & Physics at the start of Yr 12, but improved by 2 whole grades, thus was awarded a Governor's Leaving Scholarship for outstanding improvement).
> Selected to compete in the PLANCKS UK Preliminaries, a national Theoretical Physics competition for university students across the U.K.
> Bronze certificates in math challenges such as the Senior Maths Challenge, and Intermediate Maths Challenge & took part in the A2 Physics Challenge.
> Gained offers to study maths & physics at 5 universities, including Liverpool, Loughborough and Nottingham (Also, I am the first person in my family to study a physics degree)
Disclaimer: (A while ago, I read an article which stated that tutoring is the amalgamation of 3 roles: teaching, coaching and mentoring & that the best tutors, to varying degrees, undertake all 3 of these roles within their lessons. I have accumulated a wealth of tutoring experience, which I believe makes me an outstanding tutor.)
MY TUTORING EXPERIENCE + WHAT I OFFER TO HELP YOU WITH:
#1) (Teaching): I helped A-level Physics students with math-based problems in workshops for 5 months, as a voluntary Maths-for-Physics helper during Year 13, and in my final year of university, I am currently undertaking an educational-based module as part of my degree, exploring ideas of pedagogy. Tuition-wise, I have garnered ~ 100 hours of experience across over 50 lessons, tutoring 7 students and have improved grades of E/U students. I am a highly sought-after tutor on this platform, with over 50 inquiries in the past year to teach.
(What I offer to help you with): I specialize in teaching the (AQA) A-level Maths & (OCR A) A-level Physics syllabi, as I took my subjects under these exam boards, but generally can tutor well across all other exam boards. I specialise in teaching A-level Physics & A-level Maths (inc. Pure + Mechanics), having averaged 93% across 4 Pure & 2 Mechanics modules in sixth form.
#2) (Coaching): I was shortlisted for the UoL SU 'Peer Support Award' for delivering an independant talk entitled "How To Study: A Scientific Perspective" [x6] across my university and have founded my Instagram study page.
(What I offer to help you with): I can coach you to become an outstanding learner: I have in-depth knowledge about a full suite of evidence-based learning techniques, from mastery learning, spaced repetition, active recall, interleaved practice, the Layering Method, categorisation, and many more.
#3) (Mentoring): I helped 10 first-year students transition into university life, as a Physics Peer Mentor in my 2nd year of university and have been promoted as the Lead Peer Mentor in my final year. I also advised 4 sixth-form/mature students aspiring to study Physics at university, as a BrightSide Online Mentor.
(What I offer to help you with): I offer personalised support for Physics & Maths uni applications e.gs constructing personal statements, what university to go to, UCAS advice. I also offer guidance for HE topics e.gs making the most of sixth-form and university, what student life is like, applying for university scholarships and more. Although I must make this clear, I am NOT A COUNSELLOR, I am A MENTOR; very subtle but big difference!
LESSON STRUCTURE:
I do an initial consultation with each student: I first get to know you, what subjects you're studying, where you're studying, what grades you're working at, what your plans are after sixth-form, aspirational grades, how you learn best, what topics you struggle with. I then prepare tailored worksheets (typically past paper questions), which hone in on your weak areas, and also account for your current working grades and are up-to-date with the specification for your exam board. As we work through the worksheets, I will introduce and explain any new concepts + definitions, interwoven with the worksheets. I go beyond the curriculum, to fully explain the underlying principles of why things happen the way they do instead of just accepting it at face value.
I ensure to tailor my teaching methods to suit each student's needs: if you're a good problem solver, I use Socratic questioning (where I probe your understanding of concepts, using questions), or if you need more comprehensive explanations, I use the Feynmann Technique (where I explain things as if you were a 5-year old). We will also go over any mistakes you made in the worksheet and will teach you exam technique, discussing the best approach for each topical question. Additionally, I can review any school work you need help with and can work through exercise problems from textbooks for extra practice. Once the lesson is finished, I mostly always discuss with your parents about your current progress and will set you the worksheets as homework for you to complete the following week (assuming we continue lessons).
I also offer to create the following resources, upon request:
- A personalised revision timetable: to regiment your studies, when exams approach.
- Monthly assessments: to assess your understanding and retention of all the topics we've covered the previous 4-5 weeks.
- A grade tracker graph: for your parents to see your progress in lessons and assessments.
- Interactive quizzes: to gamify your revision.
- List of resources: A-level Physics and Maths websites that you can use in addition to your current studies.
General characteristics:
> I am a problem solver: I can work through the problems in real-time and can logically alter your understanding of ideas; I have gained certificates in 2 maths challenges.
> I am a highly patient person: this makes me great with struggling/slow learners, as I have no problem re-explaining ideas, even 3-5 times in a row. I myself, back in A-level classes, took more time than most people to understand concepts and constantly asked questions to clarify any misconceptions I had so I can empathise and stand in your shoes.
> I am easy-going: I pride myself on creating a positive, chill learning atmosphere where the student feels at ease to ask any questions they have, no matter how ridiculous they may seem, whilst also maintaining a high level of professionalism.
