In the first instance it is important to work with the student on what they wish to gain out of the tuition session. I believe in using the metacognition approach and part of this ethos is to work from the students basic level and working in small positive steps. Part of what I do is positive reinforcements and students needing to have reassurance and self motivational skills endorsed. My subject is English which is split into literacy, oracy, reading, writing and reflection. Each lesson will start with a recap from the previous, a new beginning, development and reflection stages. We would end with a plenary and extra motivation work to encourage strategies for the next session.
Despite how able each student is I believe every student needs to revisit literacy skills from spelling to grammar and punctuation skills, paragraphing and planning skills. Students need to reflect on their abilities and consider how and what they need to do to improve on their skills.
I have over 30 years of experience of teaching English at various levels from Key Stage two primary to GCSE English Language and Literature. I have been and am an examiner for two boards in both English qualifications. I have also assessed students with learning difficulties and have assisted them in acquiring skills to benefit their potential in English qualifications.
