In acting as a teacher's assistant at the university level, I've learned that people have methods in which they are most receptive to information. This differs from person to person, therefore I cater my teaching method on a per person basis. Learning and understanding how an individual best intakes knowledge to then provide information in that means.
Programming being such an involved and hands-on subject and also one in which their are various ways to achieve an end goal makes the use of tasks and exercises vital to determine one's level of understanding of a given concept. I make use of small exercises in order to understand the process undertook when approaching an issue. I find this tends to reveal strengths and weaknesses regarding how one engages with a given programming problem and consequently makes addressing the discovered weaknesses that much more easy.
