In my view the teacher’s role is not to teach the contents, but to create situations in which students can learn. I am well accustomed to this philosophy in teaching. I have been practicing this model of instruction through a variety of different ways while teaching Science subjects or in English teaching.
I prepare my lessons well in advance, looking at different activities objectively as to how they would pan out with my students. Needs analysis is very important in one to one tutoring which can be formal or informal. With my needs analysis I keep in mind that each student has very different needs and some students might not be able to tell me what they need. My job is to find out what my clients hope to get out of tutoring even when they can't vocalize it themselves and what level of experience they have with English.
With the learning goals mapped out, I can select engaging activities and exercises for my students to practice in order to reach them. The range of activities to choose from is endless. I would learn about my students' interests and take advantage of the wiggle room that private tutoring allows. If ever something isn't working, simply try something else.
