As no student learns the same, I will tailor each session to the students own style. Students can either bring a piece of work to the session to go through or a topic they would like to understand better. Alternatively I am happy to create revision style sessions to promote long term retention of their sylabus for exams based on the exam board taken. I prefer to use a mix test based methods and interactive problem solving when it comes to studying. However, I am open to adapting to any preferred method the student wishes to use, as their focus and motivation to learn is the most crucial factor for success.
I have a strong history with supporting young students across my career. Most recently I have been an Academic Representative for my course at UCL and a student mentor for first year undergraduates at Cardiff University. As a student mentor I ran bi-weekly sessions for 10 first year students. Each session I tailor to their needs. For example, I ran sessions about essay writing before their coursework is due, support on statistics assignments, alonside general support for adapting to student life. I also held a number of one on one sessions with the students on request to support accessing mental health services and finding student accomodation. I also spent the entirety of my teenage years as a gymnastics coach, which I believe is why I feel comfortable now with tailoring learning to every childs needs. Last summer I was also lucky enough to attend an international 2 week placement in a school in Cape Town, South Africa. Despite the ages of these children being from 3 months to 7 years, I feel I still gained valuable educational experience.
In terms of my reserach experience, as part of an integrated placement year for my undergraduate degree, I worked with UCL's Institute of Education as a research assistant. I was primarily associated with a project investigating executive functioning, motor skills and academic outcomes in traditional vs monetssori school envrionments. I was responsible for data collection, database creation and maintenance, study timetabling and admin. furthermore, I achieved a grade of 80% in my undergraduate dissertation which involved investigating the effects of Amyloid pathology on cognitive and affective deficits of a knock-in mouse model of Alzheimer’s Disease. I was lucky to gain some experience in the animal behavioural lab as well as the wet lab during this process. Finally, my masters dissertation and my work as a research assistant for Great Ormond Street Hospital involve investigating the cognitive outcomes of Cerebral Visual Impairment. These projects have granted me an indepth understanding of reserach methods and how psychology is translated to real world investigations. I also have a greater appreciation for critical analysis in research and how to find, synthesise and understand published work.
I believe my experience and passion for the subject proves me an adequate person to support a young person in their psychology education. I am happy to answer any questions you may have too.
