I have tutored children aged 5-11 for the past 6 years, where I use practise and exam questions for the SATs and 11+ to ensure that my pupils become familiar with the exam layout and to help them understand what the examiner is looking for in order to gain the marks. This involves making sure they can understand and identify the key words in the question so that they can access more difficult problem-solving questions, to gain maximum marks.

I make sure that my pupils have strong foundations so that when the work progresses in difficulty, they will have the fundamental concepts grounded, therefore they will be able to access the questions that only higher attaining pupils will be able to answer. For example in Maths, to help students understand a new concept, I use the National Curriculum's concrete, pictorial and abstract approach, to help pupils build strong foundations in their knowledge which they can apply to more difficult questions.

During lessons, if a child gets an answer wrong, I immediately address the issue by asking how they got their answer. This allows me to understand where they have developed misconceptions and misunderstandings, so that I can help them correct where they went wrong, so they can avoid making similar mistakes in the future. I acknowledge that every child has individual needs, so I provide a student-tailored approach to teaching, so that I can address their specific weaknesses and reinforce their strengths.
