I will ask questions to ensure I understand your aims and objectives for tutoring, and what exactly it is you need support with. We will work together to agree targets for progress. I focus on progress over attainment. This means we will acknowledge what you have done, rather than focusing on what you have not, or cannot, do. I will ask questions to ensure I understand your aims and objectives for tutoring, and what exactly it is you need support with. We will work together to agree targets for progress. I focus on progress over attainment. This means we will acknowledge what you have done, rather than focusing on what you have not, or cannot, do. This way, I provide a safe space where it is okay to admit to gaps in your understanding.
That might sound complicated but I will guide you through the process step-by-step. Generally, I can recognise what the obstacle is for you then guide you towards seeing it yourself. This could look like identifying a skill you're already proficient in, or knowledge you already have, and recognising how to apply it to the current situation. I can point you towards useful resources, both online and paper, to help build your understanding of a topic.
My specialism is information & research skills and critical thinking, along with developing writing or presentation skills. I can also help you improve your organisation skills and approaches to learning. Many of these are beneficial across the curriculum in that you can re-apply those skills in many situations. I have worked one-to-one with students at secondary school and university level, as well as classroom teaching in secondary schools. Thus I understand the process of learning and can adapt to a suitable pace for the individual.
My aim is to give you strategies and skills to be able to reach a point where you no longer need my input.
