I open each of my sessions with a brief introduction of myself and for the student to introduce themselves. Following this I would have the student tell me what their main areas of difficulty of the history course and work through some practice questions with them to help them understand the concepts more fully. After this I would ideally have the student do a question themselves in a timed scenario to see how well they have understood this information and help them work through any issues that perhaps still persist.
Although this would cover actual exam technique, I would also be happy to help students understand course content. For example, say a student was studying the Advanced Higher Topic of the American Civil War and they were struggling with a certain even such as the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, I would help to break the events down with them so they can see the situation in a way similar to building blocks - this would allow the student to see the basic foundations of the event and how each block within it builds upon the event to eventually complete it. This is useful for a lot of students as it allows many complex aspects of an event to be simplified as they are able to see each part of it far more clearly.
