I like to have structured lessons and frameworks and within that allow a degree of freedom for stimulating conversations and adhoc requests. I believe strongly in the growth mindset. There are no stupid questions and I want to instill in my students the confidence to try and fail and try again till success comes. Strong research shows that consistent active recall of information is the key to long term retainment and understanding. Through active teaching and testing, leading questions and quizzes, I hope to instil this mindset of resilience. From personal experience, one learns and masters a topic when they are able to explain and teach it to others. This is the goal we work towards. Alongside this there will be memorization tasks to imbed key facts and equations. I do set high standards for my students but guide them step by step to attain it. To begin with, I like to thoroughly establish a foundation of current knowledge and identify where the gaps are. Then based on time available, create smart achievable processes to fill those gaps and build a strong knowledge base for tackling the exams tailored to the exam board requirements. Having been in higher education for a number of years, I empathise with the students that the subjects are not easy and can be stressful. My goal in tutoring is to enable the student to enjoy the subject while tacking the challenges and strive for excellence.
