I always run an initial assessment to check the student's confidence and competence in the 4 skills; reading, listening, writing and speaking.
I listen to the student's answers carefully after asking them how confident they are in some areas, what apprehensions they might have and what do they do independently to improve their fluency in the 4 skills. This evaluation helps me to inform the content of my future tuitions with the student.

I work mainly with past papers and authentic material. For reading and speaking I use a phonetic system to help the student improve on their pronunciation.
I recommend French/Spanish music, online resources and tv shows for maximum exposure.
Whether it is inside the classroom or in private one-to-one I have always managed to create a very positive learning environment where students feel a sense of achievement and are confident enough to make mistakes and know that these are part of the learning process.

I look at the student's classroom material to know the content that is being covered and to consolidate and enhance their knowledge.
