When studying GCSEs and A-Levels myself, I appreciated the in-depth specification of the UK Biology and Chemistry course, but always wanted to delve in deeper than the exam board required, researching each topic deeper to higher level until all my questions were resolved. This method of continuous research and curiosity using numerous sources helped me discover a real passion for the world of science and made me eager to help others see this too. I have also taught many of my peers and younger students, and found the method of questioning until complete mastery of the topic was the most efficient. This coupled with exam questions and spaced repetition has garnered the top marks for my students. No question is ever stupid or shameful, and I welcome my students to ask away!
I found many students were blindly learning textbooks without linking the topics, and found it difficult to gain marks on analysis and essay questions. I guided them through understanding the foundations of the topic, building up to the hardest parts, integrating answers to the “why”s and “how”s. This then removed the necessity of learning every little point and reduced their overall studying time to study smarter, not harder.
I help my students to revise instead of reading ahead, making flashcards on the topics learnt in school and slowly memorising them via spaced repetition. A month before external exams, I would focus on exam questions, analysing them and picking out the exam board wording on the mark scheme and making personalised “cheat sheets” to look over in the end. My lessons help students to enjoy the subject, be confident in lessons as well high performing exceptionally in exams.
