My tailor-made PowerPoints are created using knowledge from my teaching modules at university, using theories proven to optimise student learning (including cognitive, meta-cognitive, interactionist).

The activities are very student-led. For example, in creative writing, an activity I like to try is having the student write the same sentence in different genres to see how their use of vocabulary and imagery changes. Using methods like these, the learning becomes more immersive, engaging and motivating for the student, as they can see their progress as it improves.

I ensure that after every session administrative work is completed entailing what happened in the lesson; whether the student was on time; whether an assignment has been set; notes for next time; and the overall nature of the student’s behaviour on that day, whether they completed their last assignment.

Assignments typically are small. I will not set an assignment if the student already has revision or an abundance of homework for school, as I believe they should focus on that to achieve their best grade. An example of assignments I may set include research assignments or small creative writing and writing planning assignments. If the parent/guardian does not wish for their child to receive assignments, they can let me know and I will cease to set them. Alternatively, if the parent wishes to increase the assignment volume, they can also let this be known.

In the event I encounter a problem, I will firstly talk to the student about it. If the problem ensues and I feel I cannot make any progress, I will ask to speak to a parent or guardian to try and, together, come to a solution in order to continue on.
