I have a year of experience providing one-on-one clarinet lessons to secondary school students. This experience has given me the ability to teach students complex topics, as learning a new instrument involves learning to read music, understand music theory, and understanding the mechanics of playing the instrument. Furthermore, I am passionate about the subjects I teach. One of my main goals for every clarinet lesson I provided was to give the student a passion for music as well as the ability to play their instrument well. I accomplished this by ensuring I was never lecturing at the student and that the learning activities were interactive and engaging.
My lessons are very personalized to each student's strengths and weaknesses as well as their personal learning styles. During my first lessons, I speak in-depth with the student about their view of their learning process. Additionally, I ask students for past work in the subject for me to review, and I have them complete some short exercises in the subject to get a better idea of their current level. Once I understand the needs of my students, I create a personalized learning plan for each student to accelerate their progress in the subject. This plan includes a short review of previous lessons, an interactive period of teaching new material, a small test of understanding, and a homework assignment if not provided by a school already. This format allows me to ensure that students do not forget what they previously learned and stay engaged throughout the lesson.
