My approach to teaching the beginner violinist is that each student has a different way of learning - some learn by ear, some by touch, some by reading the music and so on - and whilst I am sensitive to the learning preferences of every individual, I use their strengths to gain access to the other skills. In this way, my beginner students both acquire the ability to read the music, but also develop their overall musicality. I am interested in teaching not only the mechanics of learning to play the instrument, but also to nurture the all-round musician in each person. The primary focus of teaching the beginner violinist is first and foremost on making a nice sound! Playing the violin requires specific coordination of the whole body - and then, fine positioning of the hands and fingers to tune the notes. It is a demanding instrument to learn, but extremely fulfilling to play! Lessons should be enjoyable!

As the violin student progresses beyond the basics, we start to look at the joys of interpretation, phrasing, telling a story through the instrument and explore the wonders of the violin repertoire. We spend time looking at and honing the techniques required by the demands of this repertoire. Again, I am led by the interests and needs of the student - in terms of style, technical ability and learning preference. At least some of the lesson should be given over to ensemble playing (violin duets/ piano accompaniment) in order to foster listening skills. Together we set our goals and achieve them! Perhaps you have heard a truly virtuoso piece that you would like to play? A sound you would like to emulate? Or a recording of a folk piece that requires learning by ear? I can support you to get there. Having attained distinction in Grade 8 violin and piano, and won numerous regional music competitions, I also enjoy helping students to prepare for exams or performance.
