In my lessons, I will go through a big variety of topics, first trying to explain why ideas come from and slowly building up to applications. My goal will be be to help students become not only comfortable but also confident in tackling maths problems, whether it be for their exams or for their days to day lives. I will do my best to provide students with a range of materials, textbooks and videos so that they can see different perspectives and interpretations. If the student shows enthusiasm for the study, I will do my best to provide them with more challenge and materials to explore at their own leisure.
On an average lesson I like to start simple, go through basic examples and then gradually build up the difficulty of the content depending on the students pace. At the end I ask the student how they felt about the material and with the students agreement I suggest homework to further their understanding. Closer to exam time I like to go through exam papers and really focus on exam technique in lessons so the student is confident when it comes to sitting a real exam.
I also want to provide guidance on how to study maths independently and show to students how to take control of their own learning and their academic career.
I have mentored A level maths students, helping them work through maths problems on a weekly basis for a year. Before that I was a teaching assistant in a primary school, sometimes teaching smaller groups of similar ability. I am always taking opportunities to help friends and family friends with subjects they find difficult. All these experiences have been incredibly rewarding and they have affirmed my passion for the promotion of education.
