My lessons are based on the abilities and the interests of the particular student. I find out what music the student is interested in, then cater my classes to their interests. If the student is young, I have a set program that I follow to teach the basics such as reading music, technique, ear training, and music theory. I have 15 years experience in teaching and have taught both individual and group lessons across a range of different schools and situations. My initial training was as a classical musician in cello and piano before I expanded my horizons to the bass guitar and more popular styles such as jazz, funk, rock and soul music. I have a core belief that budding musicians need to be exposed to as much different types of music as possible to find out what music they like, and to experience sounds and cultures that they would not have heard otherwise.
I am not just a qualified teacher, I am also a composer and performer. I can offer insights into the realities of being a musician to those students who are looking to pursue music as a career. However, not everyone wants to be a musician full time. Most people play music for pleasure and relaxation. I always try to remember that point in teaching and give my students what they need. I believe strongly in the power of music and it's ability to bring much joy to students and listeners. Above all, I want my students to have fun.
