I like my lessons to be dynamic, challenging, interesting and make students think! They have to be broken down into easy to follow chunks which have a strong thread running through them to link the learning together. To be able to do this effectively it is important to know what kind of learner students are. Most would like to learn by doing and sometimes by using drama to express themselves. This can be a useful tool although it has to be remembered that history is essentially a subject that requires excellent written communication skills and so there must be a strong element of writing in every lesson. Use of coloured is important too in terms of telling a story, introducing students to sources and generating interest. Morevoer it is important too to keep in recapping through lessons with regular use of plenaries to ensure specific bits of the lesson have been learnt.
Finally, all lessons must have some kind of test and link back to previous learning and this can be done with starters at the beginning with tasks at the end to challenge the student by drawing on the content of that particular lesson. Teachers too must provide regular feedback in both oral and written forms. I have developed strategies that do just that with reference to mark schemes and expert knowledge of what examiners are looking for.
