I would start my making the students realise that learning a foreign language isn’t difficult and that is actually great fun. Whether they want to use it for work purposes or just when travelling abroad either way knowing a foreign language and culture is hugely interesting and significant and can open doors as well no matter what a particular student aims to go on to do professionally.
So foremost French for example for English speakers is not difficult as we have so many similarities between the two languages. After all English is a mixture of Saxon , so similarities with German, French because of 1066 and all that!!! and a bit of Latin too that people are often not aware of. So it’s really not difficult, I would aim to make the classes enjoyable and the language accessible, to anyone.
I would encourage them to listen to music in French ( or whatever foreign language they wish to learn, likewise see French films. Tne culture and literature of France is fantastic, and waiting to be discovered.
It’s a beautiful country with fantastic literature and of great cultural significance as well.
I would add that if you like the sound of a language you’re nearly there. It becomes much easier if you actually like the sound of a foreign language and are open to new ideas…
It’s an adventure well worth embarking on .
