As an established lecturer and consultant, I enjoy catering sessions to student and organisation needs in 1:1 or group sessions, so we'll always start with getting a good idea of your needs and tailoring everything appropriately.
Generally, I use a mix of structured and open discussion, resource packs, and task setting. The aim is to build understanding and confidence that can be applied in students' or clients' main area, whether that's the university seminar room, a dissertation, or engaging with research and evidence.
That means I don't focus on just throwing information out there, as there's little evidence this helps understanding. Instead, I draw on evidence-backed approaches to exploratory and hands-on learning, helping students and clients navigate resources, concepts, theories, and so on, so they are equipped with critical tools they can apply in the real world.
My background is in an area of social science called political ecology, though I have a broad teaching and research history within social sciences, including research methodology from undergraduate to doctoral level. I also have a keen interest in the ethics of technology, digital, and AI - and have an active research project in this area.
I have taught at five universities in England, Wales, and Scotland (where I am based). I also have a background in non-governmental organisations and have been invited to give evidence to Scottish and UK parliamentary committees. I continue to work with organisations in Scotland to help build bridges between academia and real-world practice on issues including social and environmental justice.
