I usually like to start by discussing with the parent about the student's strengths and weaknesses and what I should focus on. I then like to work through a decided topic list with the student assessing their learning techniques so I can explain and teach tailored to the student. For each topic I would prepare sets of practice questions at varying difficulties and context which enables the student to gain a full understanding of the topic. I take a friendly and helpful approach to connect with the student and teach to the best of my ability. Upon the completion of a topic, I would assess the student with a series of questions on the topic and based off of those results myself and the student would work through their areas of weakness in order to consolidate any gaps in knowledge. I would also work along side the child's school work to avoid any confusion in different teaching methods and so that the topics that I cover match up with the lessons the student receives during school. Due to my experience tutoring primary school aged children, I have lots of patience and I am able to spend however much time is necessary to guarantee the child gains complete knowledge of the subject. Throughout the session, I would provide short breaks to give the child a chance to regain focus since many children aren't able to concentrate and learn for long periods of time. I would also develop a rewards system based on the individual child to keep their engagement during the whole session. The lengths and frequencies of the sessions depend on the child, the parents and their needs.
