I have many years teaching experience with students of all abilities in classes of 28-32, smaller groups, and even 1:1 tutoring sessions. I like to think that the most successful teaching starts with the students themselves. When providing tuition I try to ascertain what the student most wants support and advice with, and then from there I can work with them to best achieve this. In this way there is no unnecessary going over of repeated ideas and skills that the student already feels comfortable with; all learning is tailored to each students needs and wants.
When starting tuition I will often ask students to answer some exam style questions or write creatively so that I can get a base line of their abilities. From there I can work with students to improve and provide them with tips, tricks and strategies that they may find useful to apply to their learning both in and outside of our sessions. Starting in this way allows us both to have something concrete to reflect on and look back to when we are discussing improvements or skills shown.
I will always endeavour to find the humour and real life parallels for my students, in an effort to make sure that the the learning we are doing is not tedious or too high a level of challenge. I believe in pushing students to work things out themselves and support independent thinking - there is after all no such thing as a wrong answer in English!
