The first session I used to talk to the student themes and to their guardian if applicable, get a understanding if what, if anything, they would like me to focus on. If its pronunciation, I also like to find out, if possible what type of learner my student is, if their a vocal learner, I will usually go through the phonetic alphabet, and once their comfortable, start teaching the student how to pronounce a word by phonetically deconstructing words.

For visual learners, my past student proffered cue cards, or cards with words and pictures. For more complex words, my students liked to practice pronouncing the word until they're comfortable.

For beginners, as a foundation I feel the phonetic alphabet is very very useful and greatly helps my past students move forward.
