I have received 2 grade 9s in English Literature and English Language GCSE. In Literature I was able to gain full marks. In my A-Levels I did the subjects of English Language, English Literature and History which helped broaden my skills in my first year of completing my Law Degree.
In terms of teaching content, I would go through the key content then make materials like flashcards on Quizlet and mindmaps to help students to revise. Then I would proceed to encourage doing past papers and predicted papers, where I am now able to use the mark schemes to grade the work.
To make the student feel more comfortable, I would encourage them to tell me their strengths and weaknesses so I can cater my help towards their needs.
My experience with doing English based subjects is that practice is honestly what strengthens your skills. Doing more work than expected definitely broadens your knowledge. As well as this, I find reading books (especially classic books) can help increase your vocabulary to have a more academic tone in your work.
