Having tutored at a leading tuition company for five years, I have acknowledged that many students feel uneasy when it comes to their studies or achieving top marks. Therefore, I like to ensure my students do not feel overwhelmed by this and provide them with tuition that best suits their learning style.
I find that the way in which students progress fastest is where they are given analytical feedback as opposed to evaluative. This is where I like to annotate through a student’s essay explaining where they may have dropped marks or been able to pick them up. I feel that this proves refreshing for the student as schools unfortunately do not provide this due to classes having to be less personalised.
Furthermore, in order for a guaranteed chance for a student to reach their desired grade, I like to provide content which is targeted to students above their range, for instance, a GCSE student will not only be limited to GCSE content but also exposed to A-Level language, structural and thematic devices to ensure their essays exceed an examiners expectation, this is integral as English is marked in a subjective manner.
For maximal efficiency, my sessions are planned with my student in coherence to what is required of them by their exam board as well as their strengths or weaknesses picked up along the way. I like for my students to be just as in control of their lessons as I am; welcoming feedback in regards to any preferences that they may have. This is key as a student’s learning involves a changing journey of preference which, when adhered to, leads to great results.
