Initially, I like to use quizzes and discussions with students to gauge areas of strength and weakness so that these can be focused on. From there, I normally teach in a style of open discussion using slides of content broken up by examples, practice problems and points to practice what has been taught. Feedback is crucial to me and so these lessons are very flexible to include or remove any aspects that students may find more or less useful. At the end of a topic I like to do a small quiz on what has been covered, often verbally walking through questions rather than exam-style conditions.
I have experience in tutoring from being a Student Mentor at Cardiff University where I gave advice to 1st year Chemistry students 1-to-1. This was across a range of subjects, from budgeting to making friends so I am experienced in tailoring my approach to teaching to suit the individual. Moreover, I have been accepted for the position of Senior Student Mentor for my proficiency in the previous role. This involves overseeing a groups of mentors all with multiple mentees and has assisted in reinforcing my management and organisational skillset. I also often lead and coordinate group revision sessions for my peers around exam season to pool knowledge and practice exam papers. This has led to our group of 4-6 achieving excellent grades and consistently managing coursework deadlines. Finally, I am a recipient of the Cardiff Scholarship which requires grades above AAA at A-level and grades above 70% at degree level. I have been on this scholarship for 3 years and I believe this highlights my continuing dedication to excellence.
