The format for my lessons will began first with a session to outline goals, get to know the student and their learning style as well as baseline knowledge. Once the goals are established and the student is comfortable with the lesson outlines lessons will encompass discussions, a few activities such as quizzes, mindmaps, question and answers, anything that the student believes will help as well as new methods to truly understand the subject.
Each lesson will be student led and whilst work goals will be set at the beginning of a lesson it is not imperative that they finish by the end, I much rather prefer to work at the pace of the student rather than a workbook or guideline. The best way to learn is through enjoyment after all.
If a student prefers written exercises then that will be done, if they prefer verbal discussion or if they prefer visual cues then the lessons will be shaped to that. Casual yet informative is the way I prefer to work, ensuring comfort and enjoyment as well as learning.
Of course I am willing to adapt and change lesson from lesson, having a lesson plan in mind but sharing it with the student so it can be adjusted to fit their needs. I also encourage some downtime within lessons, either with 5 minute breaks or longer depending on lesson length as a reset is sometimes the best thing for a student. Either way comfort, enjoyment and fun is the most important thing for me both as a student and as a tutor.
