I emphasise on understanding a topic on a deep level, rather than surface level acquaintance. In my experience, this helps people to not only achieve consistently excellent results in their exams, but also enjoy learning the subject. As a former maths student in secondary school, I'm aware of the specific learning and practice strategies required that helped me achieve a 9 in GCSE maths, A*s in both A-level maths and further maths, 80% in Oxford University's maths admission test and the Graham Wigginton award for mathematical thinking.
My lessons are tailored towards the student's needs. I would usually ask them what topics in particular they're finding difficult to learn, give them a few questions in that specific topic to assess the level of their understanding, and provide the help and teaching that is needed to master on areas where they feel relatively weaker. For sessions focussing on exam preparation, I will provide exam style questions, where the next question is given only after checking that the previous question was completed correctly, with each question increasing in difficulty. This helps the student engage more with the preparation as it gives a super mario feel towards doing maths, and it makes it easier to point out any weak points and work on those.
My aim would be to supplement the learning that's being provided at school, rather than teach in a manner which conflicts with the content taught at school, in order to avoid confusion and help optimise the student's mathematical ability.
