My lessons are conversational in style, requiring input from the student, thus running in a 'seminar style' format. I do not act as a teacher, simply giving out information for the student to copy. Instead, the process mirrors a mutual discussion, with me guiding the student through the material via discussions and correcting where necessary. By doing this, the student is an active participant, engaging in their own learning, allowing them to understand the information fully.
Seminars generally last an hour each, but I am happy to extend this if a student wants a double session. During college, I had two-hour seminars, but I recognise that for many, this is too long. I use PowerPoint slides to guide the seminar along, but I avoid 'death by PowerPoint' at any cost. Instead of relying upon the slides, they are merely a tool to steer the conversation. Each seminar covers a single topic ensuring a robust understanding of the concepts discussed in the seminar. I use a variety of tools, such as videos, short extracts of essays, and case studies, to engage the student in the practicalities of the theoretical components of the course. This makes the subject 'real' to the student, and in some cases, it is vital they can apply the theoretical argument to the practical reality.
I am also happy to set essay questions and give constructive feedback on a student's efforts. I focus first on the positives of the attempt and then move towards what a student could perhaps do better. This feedback is delivered in a way that helps the student achieve their goals as we work on their skills together. I am more than happy to work with a student on essay writing skills such as writing, structure and vocabulary use. This is generally priced into the hourly rate, although if a student wishes to write a weekly essay, there may be an additional charge for this as this can become a time-consuming exercise.
