My lessons are tailored to the student, using an approach that centres your goals and builds upon whatever musical experience you have. I like to focus on gaining the fundamental skills through exploring repertoire, exercises and just having fun with the instrument. Technique and musical knowledge are incredibly important but are often taught in such a dry clinical way that they are quickly forgotten, I prefer to make all musical education immediately practical so even the least enjoyable element of learning becomes exciting and pleasurable.

With my years of experience as a teacher working in such varied environments as schools, special schools and even prisons I have taught people from all backgrounds and ages, but through all of my experience I have found that enthusiasm and patience are the two most important skills as a teacher, I'd like to think this is evidenced by my history of students consistently reaching their goals, many of whom are now working musicians.

As a performer I've performed at festivals and stages around the country and europe, winning such awards with bands as "the parliamentary jazz award and the European Jazz award".

Despite training in Jazz, composition and indian classical music I have experience performing and teaching most styles, from metal to folk to mariachi. Any type of music that interests you to learn interests me to teach. I can accommodate most needs when it comes to teaching, as in the past I have taught mobility and learning impaired students, including those whose mobility issues would typically mean they couldn't access the bass.

Sam has been teaching my son Archie bass guitar for a couple of years. Sam has built an excellant rapport with Archie, and Archie thoroughly enjoys his lessons and has made good progress. Sam plays bass professionally in a couple of bands, and this experience of the music industry is useful and inspiring for students. Laura MCLELLAN, Roundhay

Sam is a great tutor. He helps me develop by playing different styles, using his knowledge and experience to encourage me out of my comfort zone and master new techniques. All done in a planned, friendly, supportive and non-pressurised way which motivates me to practice and learn.

I highly recommend guitar lessons with Sam. I’ve been having lessons once a week since May 2024. Sam is an excellent tutor. His lessons are enjoyable and relaxed but with a clear focus. Sam is a talented musician and incredibly knowledgeable about different genres of music and all things guitar related. I recommend Sam for beginners to advanced musicians. I’ve made great progress and plan to have lessons with Sam for as long as possible!
