My lessons occur in 90 minute blocks as that is most optimal according the current scientific literature. My online lessons are taught similar to my in person lessons where I first diagnose any fundamental misunderstandings that would affect the current topic being learnt, then I use a mixture of powerpoint and worksheets to build understanding and practice using the knowledge in an exam scenario. Having experience doing exam style questions are essential for performing well, when we practice them we will look for key words that instruct us on how to solve the problem, what bits of information we have to pull from and what format we need to present the answer in to obtain full marks. Often I will push the student out of their comfort zone with a question harder than A-level. This is not with the purpose of getting the question correct straight away but to test how the student's problem solving has improved and where it can be improved on. During all exam question practice I will get the student to verbalise outloud their thought process so I can evaluate their line thinking and look out for gaps in knowledge to prevent future mistakes and to reinforce what they are doing well. During online sessions I will share my screen on a teams, zoom or discord meeting, often writting on the powerpoint their train of thought and working out. In person I will use my laptop and paper and work alongside them. In my experience letting the student speak and analysing their thought process is the best dynamic.
