I have previous experience with tutoring younger years, so I'm aware of the different kinds of help that some people need. What i find best is to give students a small test on the first lesson - just a few basic questions on the subject that they are being tutored in - and have a small conversation about their weaknesses and strengths. Most of the lessons will be preplanned after the first session, which allows me to create a slideshow on certain areas that need improvement. I would much rather be treated as an older student than a teacher, so i would prefer if my tutees stopped me in lessons to ask for help or further explanation, even if it takes the whole lesson. (I won't charge for extra time needed.) My lessons consist of a retrieval of knowledge - three to six questions about previous knowledge - then an introduction to the lesson with key points, keywords, and the basics of the topic. The lesson will then progress into a few more questions to lock in understanding and then go into exam questions, which I will go through with them and show them how to answer. As I prefer to have two hour sessions, I do give a break of five to ten minutes, just to decrease the risks of burn-out. For homework, i usually set only one or two questions, which require less than twenty minutes as i am aware that school homework takes priority being a school student myself.
