I’ve had a passion and interest in maths from a young age, and always wanted to use this to inspire others, so they could see the subject how I see it – interesting, manageable and a force for good.
Although I’m a recently qualified teacher, it has become second nature for me to teach a classroom full of teenagers with a range of emotions, abilities and motivations. I have a strong track record of getting good grades from those at ‘bottom set’ with little inspiration to learn, students with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), as well as the More Able and Talented (MAT) who are capable of embarking on successful careers in mathematics.
I achieve this through building strong working relationships with all pupils, which I find is very important as we can build trust with each other. I ensure that they work in a warm and friendly environment to inspire them in learning.
I am a calm but confident individual who has always enjoyed tutoring young people. In my spare time I help those who need additional support before important tests and exams. Inspiring students to be confident in their own ability to achieve is the key forward in learning any new concept.
Helping younger people has stemmed from my childhood. Having gone through additional learning needs (ALN) support, I overcame these challenges through my perseverance and encouragement from my close family and friends, as well as support from schools. Seeing children in similar situations today motivates me to get the best out of others.
I am well versed in the new Welsh Curriculum, it’s a system with great potential as there are plenty of ways for pupils to confidently develop their mathematical literacy and use numeracy in their everyday life.
In terms of my teaching methods:
• I use differentiation in my lessons with mixed ability classes to get each student working at their own paces by creating extension questions and separating different category of questions based on their ability.
• I create blended learning to ensure that the students are given a variety of activities, to keep their mathematical and analytical minds stimulated and challenged.
• I use real-life scenarios to get students thinking how useful mathematics is in their everyday life.
I also build good relationships with colleagues, by actively sharing knowledge and good practice, inspiring each other to do better, so that the students get the best out of their school experience and fulfil their potential.
