Depending on the subject and topic, I'd say live examples are the best to illustrate the importance of a concept or a new idea.

For example, in supply chain management, we don't just deal with the deliveries which all of us would have daily interactions, in fact, supply chain management is much more than deliveries. It involves sourcing, storage, location, efficient four-wall operation (the latest being robotic technology and drone). It also requires the practitioners to have a strong financial common sense in the calculation of effectiveness and efficiency. Last but not least the quest to have continuous process improvement in order stave off competitions......

An obvious example is how Amazon evolved from an online book-seller to a sell-it-all e-commerce empire, why eBay was not able to as successful?
