Since completing my MA in Music at Leeds Conservatoire I have taught electric, acoustic, and bass guitar to children both privately and through teaching agencies such as Music Lab, Superprof, and Music Teachers. At Music Lab, I was tasked with teaching in both groups and one on one with students aged 5-16 years old. Group lessons would usually be structured around learning a pop/rock style song or working on a specific skill such as improvisation. Teaching to the group whilst making sure individual students weren’t falling behind was essential as well communicating clearly, particularly to younger groups of children. Parents' attitudes would vary with some choosing to sit in the lesson whereas others would be satisfied with verbal feedback at the end. Either way, it was important I made sure that the parents were satisfied with the outcome of the lessons.
Privately through my own website, and through platforms Superprof and Music Teachers, my experience teaching has been held on a one on one basis with lessons taking place online and in person. Some of my students are completely new to the guitar and need to be guided step by step on the mechanical basics of the instrument whereas some students have been playing for years and need guidance on more advanced skills such as chord theory and songwriting. I always aim to make sure lessons are structured with a clear flow and that the student feels like they are working towards a goal.
