I have extensive experience teaching Philosophy and Religious Studies, having worked as an A Level Teacher and Head of Department for over a decade. I have also taught A Level Sociology and French at GCSE Level.
My lessons are interactive and discussion-based. I do not want students to rote-learn content, but to understand it on a deeper level. I work with metaphor and real world applications to bring abstract concepts alive and make them relevant and understandable to students with a variety of different backgrounds and experiences. I use a mixture of media and materials, including handouts, PowerPoints, videos, podcasts and open AI sources such as ChatGBT.
A typical class might involve an initial revisiting and checking of basic knowledge followed by a deeper discussion around particular concepts and ideas, then the application of this content through exemplar paragraphs and short exam style questions. I will also work with students to plan and structure essays and give feedback on the work they produce.
My teaching is inclusive and sensitive to SEN and neurodiversity. I am conscious of the need to decolonise many aspects of our curricula, and I approach texts with a critical eye, recognising the prevalence of racial and class-based bias in much of the Western tradition. I am an LGBTQ+ ally and this extends into all aspects of my teaching.
I will meet with all prospective students for a 15 minute consultation to discuss their needs and aspirations and to devise a tuition plan that best meets these.
