In my first tutorial session with a new student – I conduct a “fact find” to discover their strengths and weaknesses in respect of the subject they are studying. This helps me to determine how many sessions will be needed to address their areas of weakness (e.g., topic knowledge, report writing, exam preparation etc.) and boost their self-confidence. I have access to a wide range of handouts which cover all aspects of business studies. At the end of each tutorial session – I ask the learner questions to clarify their knowledge and understanding of the topics we have covered. I will also suggest websites etc. which can be accessed by the student to supplement their learning experience. I also set tasks for the student to complete and email to me. I may present them with a case study which features a company which has a significant problem. For example, an under performing sales team. I will ask them to use tools and techniques (e.g., PESTLE, Porter’s 5 forces, SWOT analysis) to assess the impact of internal and external environments on its sales team’s performance. And undertake exploratory research to find solutions to overcome these negative influences and rebuild the cohesion and motivation of the sales team. I provide feedback which highlights the merit of their work and areas of development which need to be addressed. This robust approach helps to form a seamless link between the tutorial sessions and ensures that their objectives are fully realised. And provides a clear pathway for the student to move forwards with increased knowledge and skill to tackle the next part of their course.
