I have been tutoring for over two years now with an emphasis on making the lessons engaging for the students. I believe that a student who wants to be there and is interested in what they are doing is going to learn best.
I like to talk to the student and ask them how they think that they learn best when we first meet each other. I would then structure our initial lessons in this way, whether that is more videos, interaction, quizzes, discussions etc. As we continue to learn together the lesson plan will adapt to best suit their needs, especially if there is something like exams coming up for them.
I am a strong proponent of interaction so I like to make my own quizzes or exercises that me and the student can work through together. Additionally using resources like Kahoot! for the quizzes so that the students can also have a fun, game-like experience to break up work that can otherwise be monotonous.
Finally, when it comes to content, it is completely up to the student. They will know their strengths and weaknesses best when it comes to particular topics. My job will be to adequately plan the lessons to tackle those weaknesses in an enjoyable way that cultivates progress. I have taught a wide variety of subjects from history and geography, to maths and English. This means I will be able to provide a wide and comprehensive array of content for the students.
But the most important thing to me is that the student feels comfortable. At every point, I want them to feel as though they can ask me any questions or make any requests at all. I will always want to help and accommodate whatever they have to say, so that they can have the best experience.
