I am an enthusiastic an passionate teacher. I like to let the curiosity and interest of the student guide the lessons as much as possible, catering to their goals and tastes whilst also pushing them and expanding their outlook in a healthy way. I place emphasis on having a solid technique on the piano to avoid injuries or pains later down the line, ensuring a solid foundation to make the fastest progress possible.
My lessons typically involve a teaching a student a piece, either one that they would like to learn for their own enjoyment, or one that they can use for a graded exam. I like to use a combination of teaching by ear, imitation, and reading of music in order to develop those various assets of the student's musical ability. Everyone learns different, some are natural sight readers, and some are natural aural learners, so I like to play to their strengths whilst also encouraging healthy development in all of these areas.
During lessons I also spend time covering music theory, reading of music, and scales/arpeggios/technique. If the student is doing grades then this is essential, but even if not I strongly encourage it as in the long run it pays off, developing the student's ability to learn new pieces faster and more accurately.
I have experience teaching ABRSM, Trinity, and Rock School exam boards and my students range from complete beginners to post grade 8 level. I enjoy teaching a range of styles such as jazz, classical, pop, blues, electronic, synth, and many more! Being an avid composer and improviser myself, I love to teach this to students and show them that composing and improvising doesn't have to be scary. On the contrary, it is a wonderful way to express yourself and develop your identity as a musician and human.
