I find it helps people just to choose a subject in which they are interested. In that they way, they are more likely to learn, and to retain the subject.

The subject could be about their work, their family, applying for futher education, or literally anything, even literature. Help with reading novels, plays, going to the theatre, shopping, buying clothes, anything.

We could talk about: WilliamShakespeare, Robin Hood, James Bond, English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh castles, their purpose, and who built them.

It is not that I am an expert in any of those things, but they are the things which people have heard about and are therefore interested in learnnig more about these subjects, and we can become experts together.

I ask the student to make rough notes at the session, and then to write them up in English, it doesn't have to be perfect, then we can use those notes to recap on the subject and then move on to something else.

it's not about just having a pleasant chat, although i hope that is what it will be, it's about learning to speak and understand, and ultimately to write in fluent English.
