I am a passionate Mathematics tutor with 4 years of experience and I am currently doing my Masters in Mathematics.
Mathematics is all about having the ability to solve and persevere through anything. First I like to understand my student's purpose as it is essential for efficient learning. Having a goal, whether it be short long term, creates a sense of determination and this is important when learning. I will help students achieve their goals by introducing skills I've learned, and by teaching not what to think, but how to think, I will make sure my students can tackle any question. I will measure progress by using the Feynman technique; at the end of each session, they should be able to explain what they have learnt in a simple way and so I will know they have understood the concept or topic.
This structure of teaching has always worked in the past with previous students and also helps build confidence and allows them to gain the ability to correct their own mistakes. I make sure to emphasize the importance of this ability as it can be very useful especially when doing exams and to help improve their mathematical ability. I do also set homework to do outside of the lesson so the student can spend time working on solving problems alone and so they can challenge themselves. These questions are then solved during the first 15 minutes of the next lesson.
I can also help with any specific questions that a student might have and if they have any urgent doubts I am happy to send worked solutions in order to better their understanding.
