Experience: I have tutored over 30 students at GCSE German, the vast majority of whom got 8s and 9s. I also tutor A Level German alongside my own studies, where all of my tutees are getting A* grades on assessments.
My lessons are dynamic, interesting and engaging. First, I have an introduction and assessment session with the student to gauge their level of proficiency, particular strengths & weaknesses and to establish a rapport with the student so they feel comfortable with me. Then, I devise a unique, personalised lesson plan designed to target weak points and build confidence before moving onto more difficult topics. I underpin my curriculum with a solid knowledge of grammar structures designed to obtain high marks in examinations.
After my sessions, I typically assign vocabulary practice as homework (a minimum of an hour each week). This is usually completed on Quizlet, where I have over 100 sets of flashcards pre-made for students to study, but some past tutees have also successfully used Anki and other flashcard apps. The following session, I test the students on the vocabulary I have asked them to learn to secure their knowledge.
Beyond that, my lessons differ from a conventional classroom experience that some students may deem "boring", while retaining the core teaching principles which allow for strong language skills to develop. Students can expect to be introduced to a wide range of beginners German literature, films, podcasts and even games.
Speaking practice is a priority for me, as I understand this is a weakness for many students, largely due to a lack of confidence. I will also occasionally assign 16 and 32 mark essays to be done as homework to be marked to a GCSE mark standard, to help practice for the writing exam. I have access to the Kerboodle textbooks for AQA, Eduqas, Edexcel and WJEC German and these will be utilised in lessons.
