I have experience teaching a year 11 student in the past and she really enjoyed my teaching. I teach students the way they want to be taught which means I use familiar methods. I also try to break down topics into smaller units that are easy to understand and remember. I also provide students with revision tests every two weeks to help them recall steps and to estimate their level of understanding. I will also make small notes for formulas and methods that they can easily remember. I make efforts to make math seem like fun instead of taking it as a burden.
In the past, even I wasn't the best at math but through repetition and practice I was able to score very well in my exams at school and college. Math is nothing to be afraid of, it is something to keep pace with. It will be clearer when we take small steps everyday or even every week to catch up on course material.
To be more effective, I try to relate to the student and try to gauge how they would understand what I am teaching. If something makes more sense to them if taught in a different manner, I will take that route.
All in all, I try to create more of a friendly atmosphere and not an extremely formal one so that the students feel incredibly comfortable and can share their issues and concerns with me about anything. After all it is their weak points that I have to focus on!
