I like to get a breakdown of your lesson plan for the previous and upcoming school year in order to understand how far within the language you’ve be able to progress. We’d then find our best approach for that student, whether that be to go at the rate of their professors or to work ahead, to add in personal projects to build up skills and a portfolio to advertise to future internships or employers, and/or tackling multiple languages at once.
As for my lesson plan, I practice the approach my university professors used via various language specific textbooks and projects. Additionally, I’d implement resources, like Codecademy, YouTube University, Stack Overflow, and Khan Academy to name few, to ensure I find the best approach for each student I tutor.
My experience has had great responses for years now; and I’ve really enjoyed being able to see the ‘clicking’ moment when my peers understand the subject at hand.
