I usually give a short lecture on either a powerpoint or slide show, including informative and detailed examples. Toward the end of every lecture, I have a couple of select questions from a variety of sources that the student can choose to work on. I use the Campbell Biology (an excellent college-level, first-year biology textbook) to teach my students. I cover all content covered in the Advanced Placement Biology (or AP Biology) Exam. This roughly corresponds to an advanced high school or early college course in biology, though the content is introductory and very approachable. The content covered in the course and textbook can be found at the link below. I also teach an introductory biology course, which follows from the same book but does not go in to as much detail.
I am currently an 11th grader at Foothill High School in Pleasanton, California. I have taken college level coursework in mathematics (including multivariable calculus), computer science, and biology. I also conduct research in ecology and computer science, with a couple of papers in the pre-publishing stage. I also have prior experience teaching mathematics, both through my school and a tutoring location outside. I intend to continue studying biology and mathematics through college level coursework, research, and teaching positions. I value curiosity, determination, and dedication in students, as I believe most other skills can be taught. My ultimate goal is for the student to learn the concepts at hand, and for students to come out of my lectures with a fascination in biology and the natural world.
