From my experience as a tutor, be it tutoring Sciences/Mathematics to Languages, application and practice always accelerates their growth. By starting from the basics and applying it often by communicating and practice by questions, it builds confidence and create fluency at the students' level. Then slowly progressing to more advanced levels still incorporating the skills from previous levels and still applying and practicing will definitely improve the students' skills.
To start tutoring, I usually ask the students on where they think they are and what sort of tutoring they need, if there is anything specific that needs extra help. From there I test the student to see where they actually are in order to formulate lessons accordingly to the results of the test. That will be the starting point and that is were we will work from and continue to progress to more difficult tasks. I understand that every individual is at different stages, and have different styles of learning, so by taking testing them, I can plan the lessons accordingly to each individual's learning style and their base knowledge. If there are certain/specific things that the students wish to ask from school or from other sources, I shall answer while teaching the students regarding the matter they ask of.
