I am a graduate entry medical student, with a previous BSc in Biomedical Sciences. I have experience as a private tutor for maths (KS2,3,4) and GCSE Science. I have also gained experience as a volunteer maths tutor with Action Tutoring where I tutored small groups of 2-3 students at a time, planning and executing teaching plans tailored to the individual needs of the students and taking into account what teaching style worked best for each of them. I believe understanding the style that works best for each student and being flexible in my communication best enables students to reach their personal academic goals.
Lesson formats will differ depending on the particular subject and the individual. With science lessons, I tend to give a brief presentation on the subject with active participation from the student, before doing an active recall activity , followed by exam question practice.
With maths, I prefer to do a warm-up exercise at the start of the session which helps focus the student as well as allowing me to gauge their ability. If we are going through a new concept, I would first demonstrate how to answer that type of maths questions, then we would work through one or two, before the student would then do some themselves. Depending on where their skill level is, we would conclude with a exam question example.
When tutoring, I think it is preferrable to focus on active practice with students where they can receive tailored guidance and live feedback from me, rather than lecture style tuition. his helps to supplement the education they get from school and better prepare them for exams.
