I am a fully-qualified and experienced teacher in English language and literature, at GCSE and
A level, with over twenty years' experience in teaching pupils at all levels in independent schools, and as a private tutor. Recently I have trained younger pupils for entrance examinations to the schools of their choice.
At the start of the tutoring process with each new student, I gauge the needs and current ability of the student, in order to tailor lessons to their needs.
I have, since starting private tuition, a large number of references from satisfied parents who tell me that one of my main strengths is encouragement. I have been told that my approach helps put students at ease. I aim to build a sense of self-esteem in my students and show them that they can indeed reach their potential.
I teach online on Zoom; this ensures continuity should there be an interruption to face-to-face lessons. I set and mark homework, and return it before the next lesson. I encourage students to see the importance of homework done consistently. In this way, a lot of ground can be covered, far more than in one hour's tuition a week. I must add that I enjoy giving the background to literature texts: context is a very important part of the syllabus. Past students who are very happy to have reached their full potential in this subject have passed on my details to their friends, who have done equally well.
