I have taught a course for new undergraduates at the University of Oxford, offered undergraduate tutorials for St John's College, Oxford, and taught theology at the access-level for those often without undergraduate experience. I also have experience teaching Biblical Hebrew as a private tutor and offering private tutorial support to an Oxford undergraduate with ADHD. I also have experience teaching English as a second language and many years of teaching on the Bible and theology within churches on two different continents among a wide variety of cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
For more analytical subjects like Theology and Philosophy, I often use a socratic approach to helping students think, learn, and understand. I also would employ the Oxbridge style tutorial style, in which the student writes an essay and is given feedback on how to improve said essay and how to think more robustly and persuasively about the subject. I will use humour and analogies in my explanations, but I also try to help the student discover what they bring to the table from their own experiences and talents when it comes to writing essays and thinking through questions and formulating responses.
My DPhil from the University of Oxford was for an interdisciplinary thesis, in which I brought together theology, philosophical epistemology, cognitive science, and Pierre Bourdieu's approach to sociological analysis to not only explain why academic theology is sometimes broken, but how it can be done better. I will bring this same breadth of knowledge, creativity, and analytic prowess to each subject and student that I teach.
For learning languages like Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, I help students understand the grammar and logic of the forms as well as get the students reading texts as quickly as possible. If desired, I can even approach language learning in a model more similar to living languages like Spanish.
