I begin with going over content initially. This can vary from interactive starter activities to see what students know or don’t know about the topic so that I know what to focus my session on. We then go through the topic usually in the first half of the session through interactive whiteboards and interesting videos related to the topic which are essential musts to watch. Throughout this, I am constantly asking students if they are unsure at any point so that I can re-explain or find a different way of teaching a concept. I then share notes for the students for those studying GCSE and a level biology and chemistry completely free of charge so they can refer back to the notes post session. The second half, and arguably the most important half is applying the knowledge we have just done to exam questions. I tend to pick questions which come up a lot on a particular topic as well as trickier questions as well to get the student really thinking hard for what the answers could be. We then go through the answers and methods for the questions. Post session, I recommend other useful websites, resources and videos to further consolidate what they have studied in my session. I then discuss with them what they would like to go through in our next session so that I can prepare the relevant resources for them in our following session.
