The first lesson will be important in establishing the starting point and the goals of the tutoring as well as areas of strength and targets for later lesson content. This will involve chatting with the student and beginning to build a good working relationship which can be one that is productive and engaging where the student feels free to let me know if they don't understand. It is really important to me to build an atmosphere where, as well as lots of check-ups of understanding from me, the student is comfortable asking questions if they need any extra support or clarification. The attitude towards mistakes and learning from these with a growth mindset is central to my lessons, seeing these as positive ways to grow and not something to avoid!
The lessons will fit with the needs of the student and are likely to follow the structures of either (1) following and consolidating schoolwork, (2) using the lessons to widen understanding beyond the curriculum or (3) revision and consolidation in specific areas where more support is needed. I am very flexible and it would be easyto adjust and switch between these focusses as required.
From my own student experience, I find interaction is extremely important in understanding and memory. Each lesson will have a recap of key points from previous lessons, lots of questions to check understanding throughout, as well as a summary of the essential concepts learnt at the end. Depending on the requirements of the student, homework will be provided but if this is not desired, adjustments can be made to include more understanding testing within the lesson instead.
Within the lesson, I will use the best learning and retention techniques I use in my own studies, including spaced repetition between lessons, retrieval practise, the Feynman Technique of asking the student to teach me the concept to check their understanding, and working with the student to create personalised memory tools including acronyms.
The quality of online teaching is important for me to provide an engaging and effective lesson and so I will ensure that my technology quality is always good to provide this.
